Description / Position Overview

Skilled Maintenance Tech I

In this position, you will perform a variety of skilled construction, maintenance, and repair duties in support of the Police department including ten (10) police department structures.

Essential Job Functions- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Skilled maintenance and repair duties including basic carpentry, shelf installations, building modular office panels/partitions, replacing ceiling tiles, changing light bulbs, patching/ painting interior/exterior walls and trim, replacing smoke detectors, replacing/repairing door handles, reset circuit breakers, replacing or rebuilding flush valves and faucets, toilet and sink maintenance
  • Snow/ice removal at the Police Operations Center and as needed at other facilities
  • Relocate furniture/equipment
  • Perform building inspections to identify preventative maintenance and repair requirements
  • Respond to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) calls for service; requisitions materials and supplies using competitive pricing practices
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of stocked supplies and materials to meet work order demands
  • Conduct monthly above ground storage tank and fire extinguisher inspections
  • Read equipment dials, gauges, settings, and blueprints
  • Assist with planning and coordinating the use of contractor services and repairs to include the inspection and verification of any contracted maintenance
  • Interact with department employees and volunteers on a daily basis
  • Provide status updates on submitted work orders and progress of repairs and projects to customers
  • Monitor contractor project performance
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word Essentials and Microsoft Excel
  • Low voltage systems (intercom, duress and fire alarms) 
  • Troubleshooting and installation experience with audio/video equipment
  • Working knowledge of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) maintenance and generators
Ability to:
  • Properly use various types of hand and power tools according to safety guidelines
  • Use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Troubleshoot issues and report deficiencies to Unit Supervisor  
  • Use analytical judgment  
  • Adjust to multiple and changing priorities
  • Remain flexible and open in order to meet all operational needs
  • Read equipment manuals, equipment dials/gauges, settings, and blueprints. 

Successful candidates will have

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of full-time skilled maintenance and/or technical experience related to the area of assignment
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

Ideal candidates will also have

  • Three years of maintenance tech experience
  • Working knowledge of Cartegraph Systems
  • Knowledge of audio/visual equipment
  • Previous Experience working inside a public safety facility

Additional Information

The job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph examination, extensive background check, and other pre-employment assessments.

Physical Demands  The ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs. frequently; or up to 10 lbs. constantly.

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
