Job Description
Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Experience: Minimum of 1 year with recent experience in CVOR, including open hearts within the last 6 months.
License: Must be registered as a surgical technologist in accordance with state regulations.
Certifications: Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing is required.
Must-Have: BLS from the American Heart Association is required.

Description:
The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of the surgeon and nursing staff.
Assists the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile setups of instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases.
Passes items to surgeons and nurses as needed.
Assists in preparing and moving patients as well as sterilizing and cleaning instruments, equipment, and rooms.
Primarily scrubs on cases for the heart team and CVOR.
Uses physician preference cards to identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled surgical or emergency procedures.
Updates preference cards with necessary changes.
Sets up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures.
Prepares solutions and medications used, properly labeling and reporting amounts for charting.
Prepares back tables and mayo stands while anticipating the needs of the surgeon.
Provides supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nursing staff, and anesthesiologist.
Assists with draping the sterile field, draping and covering operating and instrument tables.
Performs appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation, before incision closure, and as needed.
Delivers surgical specimens/cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse.
Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures by checking package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures.
Prepares and sterilizes supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
Reviews and replaces supplies in the surgical case following a procedure.
Discards expired medications per protocol.
Assists with terminal cleaning of the operating room.
Puts equipment, supplies, and instruments away as required.
Assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
Holds retractors, instruments, sponges, or suction at the operative site, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cuts suture material, connects drains to suction apparatus, and applies dressings to wounds.
Ability to provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per departmental policies.
Effectively communicates with the surgical team.
Anticipates possible problems or complications that could arise during cases.
Adjusts quickly and prepares for emergent cases that change workflow.
Performs all duties in a conscientious, courteous, and caring manner.
Maintains efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours.
Adheres to departmental procedures and accepted protocols.
