HR Technician I

Join the Human Resources team at the Colorado Springs Police Department and find meaningful work in public service. This entry-level position provides an opportunity to grow your HR career doing impactful work in a fast-paced environment. We offer flexible and hybrid work schedules after an initial training period.

In this position, you will provide support to the Police Human Resources Section in the Employee Services Unit, supporting a variety of functions across the employee life cycle.

Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:

  • Provide administrative support to the CSPD human resources section.

  • Assist the senior HR generalist and HR supervisor with special assignments.

  • Provide administrative support to Senior HR Generalist HR Supervisor and assist with special assignments.
  • Weekly payroll processing; this includes ensuring all time is updated and approved and working with employees and supervisors to reconcile errors.
  • Provide backup support to the HRIS Analyst for the staffing software.
  • Process new hire paperwork and meet with new hires on their first day.
  • Prepare and process Personnel Action Forms.
  • Process VA On-the-Job training certifications.
  • Draft promotion write-ups.
  • Maintain and archive personnel and medical files. Responds to requests from internal and external customers regarding personnel file reviews and copies.
  • Respond to requests from external federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies regarding prior and current employees. Requests include: Employment verifications, questionnaires, personnel file review, and release of records.
  • Gather and provide documents for CORA and CCJRA requests.
  • Track and maintain legal holds.
  • Assist with NeoGov Learn.
  • Maintain civilian probation completion memos and teleworking agreements.
  • Manage and process parking garage access paperwork for the POC parking garage.
  • Coordinate, plan, and purchase supplies for promotion ceremonies.
  • Create sworn promotion Appointment Letters and Oath of Offices.
  • Coordinate the Officer of the Month Awards Program and luncheons, distribute Service Awards, and coordinate other special awards by outside agencies. Track awards in Peoplesoft.
  • Process employee name changes, outside employment memos, and college transcripts/degrees.
  • Monitor and respond to the CSPD HR email inbox and main phone line.
  • Sort and distribute mail daily.
  • Provide customer service at all times to both internal and external customers via phone, email, and walk-ins regarding document processing, file review, time and labor, etc.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Proficiency in data entry
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Understanding of records release and retention policies
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and supporting software
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to all customers
Successful candidates will have
  • A high school diploma or GED
  • One year of full-time human resources or customer service experience
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
Ideal candidates will also have
  • Experience in public-sector human resources
  • Experience with an HRIS system

Additional Information

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of computer keyboard; light lifting.
